Versatility with a fun factor: Dehler 30od

International German Championship Double Handed Offshore as part of Rund Bornholm: Hat trick for Freudenberg/Reichert? A total of 43 yachts have registered for the long-haul round Bornholm.

Whether double-handed or with a crew, young or old, women's or men's crew, regatta or cruising sailing: the Dehler 30od is the all-rounder for getting started with sea sailing. Versatility with a fun factor. As the former Olympic classes Dragon and Star have already shown that Olympic status is not required to be a successful uniform class, the Dehler community is now also underlining this. The attempt to establish offshore sailing at the 2024 Olympic Games has just failed (kiting was awarded a separate women's and men's classification), when the entry lists for the major events show that the Dehler 30od, which had Olympic ambitions, was course is. At the long-distance classic “Rund Bornholm”, which took place as part of the 83. Warnemünder Woche will be held from July 5th to 8th, six, maybe seven Dehler 30od will be at the start, two to three in the double-handed, four in the ORC classification. A total of 40 yachts registered for the approximately 270 nautical mile race, including 14 crews for the IDM Double Handed, 18 in the ORC classification and eleven in the Yardstick measurement.

Double handed remains trendy

“The trend towards double-handed sailing is unbroken and is growing,” says Eckart Reincke, who, as a sea sailing expert, supports the race management in Warnemünde. A trend that Dehler 30od wants to use as a standard class. Bodo Mall, board member for youth and training at the sailing association “Das Wappen von Bremen” (SKWB), also shares the same sentiment: “In addition, it is becoming increasingly difficult to get crews of several people together. With a two-man crew you are more flexible.” So the man from Bremen, who otherwise had success with the “Bank of Bremen”, a J/V 52, is at the start in front of Warnemünde with a Dehler 30od. Together with Alexander Beilken from the Bremen Beilken sailmaker dynasty on board, the “Power Play” competes against eleven competitors in the long distance of the International German Double-Handed Championship. “Around Bornholm” is the first part of the multi-part IDM, which will continue in September with the short routes off Olpenitz as part of the IDM Offshore.

“Two years ago we started a cooperation with the German Touring Yacht Club to form a sea sailing team for the Olympic Games. Even if this dream has shattered, we want to stick to the concept of offering starting points for young sailors. “It’s a topic for the future for the SKWB,” says Mall, who doesn’t rule out remaining active in Dehler himself. First of all, it's a matter of getting to know each other in order to make decisions for the traditional Bremen club together with Alexander Beilken, who is responsible for the regatta area in the SKWB, after the experience of the IDM. The Dehler 30od was chartered from Speedsailing because Oliver Schmidt Rybandt, who won the Baltic 500 regatta last year with the “Power Play”, traditionally competes in the VO 60 “Glashäger” off Warnemünde.

Nevertheless, Schmidt-Rybandt raved in the run-up to the 83rd. Warnemünder Woche from the Dehler 30od: “We are proud and grateful to have been so closely involved in the development of this boat. After the first thousand miles, relief also set in. The boat runs fast in all conditions, has above average control and looks beautiful. We have fun training, racing and vacationing. We didn't want to build the Dehler with any compensation, which means sacrificing speed and sailing fun.” In the “Around Bornholm” race, however, the man from Greifswald will only be able to admire the Dehler from the outside. Probably only briefly when he sails past with his “Glashäger”.

IDM: strong Dehler 30od competition

The Dehler 30od competition at the IDM Double Handed is impressive. In addition to the Bremen “Power Play”, Morten Bogacki, the Minitransat third place from 2019, is in the race with the second Dehler 30od. Felix Köster is on board the radiologist from Rendsburg. The “Humboldt”, christened at Kiel Week 2020, was only used for training after Kiel Week. “Unfortunately the Baltic 500 was canceled,” said Bogacki. The 34-year-old still has the Blueribbon Cup on his schedule this year and of course the second part of the IDM in September. “I have to decide on Silverrudder and Kiel Week at short notice,” explains Bogacki, who as a radiologist also works shifts and weekends. The long route before Warnemünde is the first location assessment this year. And yet Bogacki is a favorite for Oliver Schmidt-Rybandt to win the IDM.

The third Dehler 30od, which is registered for the IDM Double Handed, will probably not be ready in time. Michael Hoesch (Bavarian Yacht Club) found the Dehler through his daughter and bought one. Camilla Hoesch took part in the first Dehler 2020od best determination as part of the Kiel Week in 30, sailed together with Joshua Weber in third place behind Oliver Schmidt-Rybandt/Felix Hauss and Robert Stanjek/Morten Bogacki (see above) and raved about the boat. Now the father wanted to catch up with his daughter and had registered with her crew for the “Rund Bornholm” race. But it is questionable whether the ship will start. “It's extremely unfortunate. We want to use the boat several times, for cruising in the Baltic Sea with my wife and for regatta sailing with Camilla and Joshua,” said Michael Hoesch, who describes himself as a cruising sailor and spoke on Wednesday before the Warnemünder Woche no longer believed in the start. But that would give us more time to keep our fingers crossed for our son Adrian, who is competing for Samoa in the 470 at the Olympic Games. Schmidt-Rybandt was more optimistic. "We can do it. The ship will be transferred on Saturday and Michael Hoesch can start on Monday,” said the absolute Dehler 30od fan, who suffers from not being able to sail a Dehler “Rund Bornhom” himself. But the “Glashäger” also offers enough potential for sailing fun.

A Dehler best determination between the two to three two-handed crews in the IDM and the four multi-person crews in the ORC classification should be possible with the use of weight compensation (water tanks). At least there is a common start.

IDM: Title hamster at the start

But it's not just the Dehler 30od fighting for the Double Handed title. At the IDM, the “halbtrocken” (First 36.7) with Knut Freudenberg/Nils Reichert (SV Flensburg) and the “Sharifa” (JPK 10.10) with Rasmus Töpsch/Max Gurgel (Yacht-Club Strande) are definitely among the favorites.

Freudenberg/Reichert arrive as double double-handed defending champions (2019 and 2020), Max Gurgel as runner-up in 2020. Both crews are long-running favorites in the regatta scene. Freudenberg has a total of four IDM titles under his belt, Gurgel already has five titles. Gurgel, whose job is to make yachts faster, competed in the IDM Double Handed off Kiel in 2020 as part of the joint Olympic campaign with Lena Marie Weißkichel. Their “Sharifa” (L-30) belonged to Rasmus Töpsch, the L-30 president at the time. After the Olympic exit for the sea sailors, Töpsch/Gurgel now want to tackle it together with the former “Hidden” (JPK 10.10) Double Handed. “The chemistry is right,” says Gurgel.

Female power in the ORC field

By the way: Lena Marie Weißkichel (Grossheidorn Sailing Club) switched from the L-30 to the Dehler 30od. The 21-year-old former Laser Radial squad sailor still has Olympic ambitions and is planning a 2024er FX campaign with Nadine Böhm for 49. Before Warnemünde, she is not sailing for the double-handed crew championship but is competing with a women's crew in the ORC classification in the “Rund Bornholm” race in order to put fear into the minds of the men. – Hermann Hell
