The sailing competitions: Compressed and high-profile

The 83. Warnemünder Woche is over and it has been shown that the organizers were able to realize a top sailing event despite Corona restrictions and difficulties caused by construction work on the middle pier. This year twelve boat classes took part over the course of the nine regatta days Warnemünder Woche. 900 participants from 20 nations sailed with around 500 boats for the best placings.

During the Warnemünder Woche Among other things, two European Championships, three German Championships, a German Open, the Laser Europa Cup and the long-distance classic Rund Bornholm were held.

Jesper Armbrust won that Contender European Championship As part of the Warnemünder Woche. The Dane defended his lead against the field of 78 competitors for five days and won confidently. The reigning world champion Max Billerbeck became vice European champion.

The new European champion of the First / Seascape 18 class are Blaž Kmetec and Jure Jerkovič. The event was a start-to-finish victory for the two Slovenians, as they did not have to give up the lead on any of the three days of sailing.

In the first part of Warnemünder Woche 44 teams competed in the class 505er to identify their masters. German champion were Wolfgang Hunger and Holger Jess, neither of whom could hold a candle to them. The world champions from 2001, 2003 and 2005 showed consistently good performance and did not finish any of the ten races worse than third place

Svenja Thoroe and Karsten Bredt won the championship title International German Pirate Championship defended against 48 teams. The championship took place on the last day Warnemünder Woche over. The two showed good results in all ten races.

Michael Höfgen from the Kiel Yacht Club and his fellow sailor Eckhard Kaller were the German Champion Double Handed Offshore Longdistance. The championship took place as part of the long-distance Bornholm circuit. Höfgen was fastest both in terms of time sailed (1 day, 23 hours, 56 minutes, 6 seconds) and in terms of calculated time with the JPK 10.30 “Lightworks” (2 days, 19 minutes, 58 seconds).

The victory in the German Open of the J/70 went to Michael Grau from Hamburg and his international crew, consisting of the Briton Gerry Mitchell, who has already taken part in three Volvo Ocean Races and several Farr 40 world championship titles, and the Australian professional sailor David Chapman, Sailing Champions League -Winner from 2019, and the Hamburg sailor Florian Thoelen.

The Long distance regatta around Bornholm This year was characterized by light winds, which demanded a lot from the participants. A total of 35 yachts took part. The fastest yacht in terms of time sailed was the TP 52 “Imagine”. According to the calculated time, “Halbtrocken 4.5” became the fastest ship and won the ORC ranking.

The largest field was once again the laser class ILCA / Laser Europa Cup, divided into classes ILCA 4 / 4.7, ILCA 7 Standard and ILCA 6 Radial, with 171 ILCA / lasers. Johan Schubert from Denmark won the ILCA 7 / Laser Standard, the German Julia Büsselberg won the ILCA 6 / Laser Radial and the Dutch Max Frank won the ILCA 4 / Laser 4.7.
