It all started in 1926, 97 years ago. One can imagine that a lot has happened in almost a century. The then newly founded Warnemünde Sailing Club (WSC), now the organizer of the Warnemünde Week regattas, was responsible for, among other things, races off Warnemünde and the Mecklenburg Baths Race as part of association and equalization races. This regatta served as a feeder regatta from the Kiel Week to the Pomeranian Week, which was then the second largest regatta event in the German Empire. A total of 47 boats took part - the Warnemünder Woche was born. Successful years in sport followed and more and more visitors were drawn to Warnemünde on land.

But the Second World War ended the success story Warnemünder Woche – for now. The last one took place in 1939 Warnemünder Woche instead of. The mined Baltic Sea and bans on sailing made sailing competitions impossible. It wasn't until 1951 that an official one was made again Warnemünder Woche aligned. In the new political system of the GDR, the regatta series was from then on called Ostseewoche, was not limited to Warnemünde, and attracted more and more participants and visitors. After the fall of the Wall, the Baltic Sea Week became the week again Warnemünder Woche under the direction of the Warnemünder Sailing Club. Today, the colorful week is one of the largest and most important regatta events in Germany, enjoys international renown and is the largest folk festival in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania after the Hanse Sail Rostock.

Several thousand active people from different genres, from traditional clubs to sports and trade to garden clubs and many more visitors who line the parade route, make it the popular highlight at the beginning of the parade Warnemünder Woche. The tradition of the Ümgang goes back even further: in 1976 it was launched as the Warneminner Ümgang on the occasion of the Workers' Festival, at that time still under the management of the Warnowwerft. After the fall of the Wall, the Warnemünde Association took over the organization and continues to do so successfully to this day. One Warnemünder Woche Without Niege Ümgang is no longer conceivable.
