Beach rugby tournament: Berlin double victory
Ten men's and five women's teams battled it out today at the Warnemünde Beach Arena in a beach rugby tournament, starting at 10 a.m. with tackles and fast-paced rallies vying for victory. The trophy went to a team from Berlin in both the men's and women's competitions.
The only beach rugby tournament on the Baltic Sea coast has been held for many years as part of the Warnemünder Woche The tournament was held and organized by the Rostock rugby club, the "Dierkower Elche." Two new features were added this year. The Predators Cheerleaders Rostock presented an acrobatically demanding show at midday. Additionally, two veterans' matches were played for the first time, where the focus was clearly on fun, and a trophy in the shape of a walking stick with a rugby ball on it was awarded.
In the women's competition, the team from Berliner SV prevailed against the players from the University Sports Club Jena, who had previously won the Warnemünde tournament three times in a row. The third-placed team was a joint team of athletes from Halle and Leipzig, who had joined forces for the beach rugby tournament. The Rostock team had to settle for fourth place.
In the men's competition, the Flying Pirates from Berlin successfully defended their title in the battle for the sand crown. The team from Halle finished second, ahead of the players from Oranienburg.
"The atmosphere at the tournament was great again, everyone had fun. And the weather was fantastic. We're already looking forward to next year, but first we'll be celebrating with all the teams tonight at the Wal-Bar," said organizer André Goeda.
