Warnemünder Jolle: boat regattas since the 1850s

In the past, such dinghies were not only used to earn a living by fishermen, but also for excursions with tourists and of course for regattas. The following can be read in the Rostocker Anzeiger, probably from August 1906: “The Warnemünde boaters' regatta took place yesterday. As usual, it aroused keen interest. 31 boats were involved. The pilot commander Borgwardt, Captain R. Ohlerich and Captain H. Plath acted as referees. At 3:35 a.m. the first half of the dinghies set sail and five minutes later the remaining boats followed. The first to return was the boatman H. Hauth with his dinghy; he had sailed the approximately 7 nautical mile distance in 1 hour 34 minutes and 25 seconds. […] The prize distribution was carried out at 7 a.m. in the “Schweizerhaus” by Mr. Swimming Commissioner von Moser. In addition to cash prizes from 30 marks upwards, the prizes consisted of valuable ornamental and everyday items.”

One of the special exhibitions that changes annually in the local history museum is dedicated to sport in Warnemünde and thus also to sailing. In the brochure that was published for this exhibition you can read: One would think that there was a club-like organization of sailing in the fishing and seafaring town of Warnemünde early on. But in this field too, people took their time. Nevertheless, sailing took place. Not only to earn a living, but also to entertain the bathers with “journey rides”.

Races by Warnemünde boats were reported as early as the 1850s.

In the absence of a local sailing club, larger races and regattas were organized by the “Mecklenburg Yacht Club”, founded in Rostock in 1884. In 1885 he organized his first regatta off Warnemünde, which pilot commander Stephan Jantzen (1827-1913) promptly won. In 1898 the first open German sailing regatta took place off Warnemünde. In 1903 and 1904 the German Emperor accompanied the race from Travemünde to Warnemünde with his sailing yacht “Meteor”. The Warnemünde dinghy regattas were also very popular. On January 24.1.1925, 25, 1926 men came together and founded the Warnemünde Sailing Club. From XNUMX the club was co-organizer of a major event - the Warnemünder Woche.
