The organizers of the Warnemünder Woche (July 2nd - 10.07.2022th, XNUMX) are further developing their security concept: In the future, every ship participating in Rund Bornholm will be tracked using AIS. Boats that do not have their own AIS are equipped with rental AIS trackers because safety is the top priority.

With the company FleetMon Warnemünder Woche a partner on board who is an expert in the field of ship position tracking. The technology provided ensures that the participating yachts are located, which massively increases safety and gives fans and relatives on land the opportunity to join in the excitement. In an interview, Stephanie Duscha from FleetMon explains the commitment and the technology behind it.

What is FleetMon doing? Warnemünder Woche?
Stephanie Duscha: We support them Warnemünder Woche as a partner since 2018. We provide SAT trackers for boats participating in Around Bornholm that are not equipped with their own AIS tracker. Private sailing boats are exempt from the requirement to have an AIS tracker on board. A satellite-based tracker offers an alternative. There is also the associated webmap on our own site warnemuender-woche.live/, which is also on the homepage of Warnemünder Woche is integrated. This webmap we created shows the participating ships and the race in real time.

How does AIS tracking work?
Every ship is generally required to have an AIS tracker on board and sends these signals via VHF to AIS stations several times a minute. As already mentioned, private sailing boats, for example, are excluded from this. The data contains, among other things, information on speed, draft, ship name and also details about the cargo. At FleetMon alone, millions of ship position data from several thousand of our own AIS stations worldwide are used every day and on our website fleetmon.com as well as made visible in our live tracking tool FleetMon Explorer. AIS signals (Automatic Identification System) are used to prevent collisions at sea. FleetMon offers many other services such as predicting the next ports and the ship's expected route. This is very interesting for logisticians, for example.

How is tracking ensured away from the coast?
Coverage in the Baltic Sea can be ensured in the Bay of Mecklenburg, past Rügen and around Bornholm through our AIS station network.
Only ships that have an AIS transmitter on board can send and receive AIS signals. All other ships are provided with a SAT tracker for around Bornholm. It sends a GPS position as a message to a satellite and this is forwarded to us. We can then integrate these and use them to show the movement of a ship.
