505 made of wood at the European Cup: successful saltwater premiere
One boat in particular stood out at the 505 Europa Cup. The mahogany hull of Andreas Jungclaus's boat “More Wood Than Coal” shone brown in the sun. For around three and a half years, from 2008 to 2012, Jungclaus rebuilt the old Sommerfeld shell from six millimeter thick mahogany wood together with a boat builder. Most of the original parts have been preserved. “All the molded parts are old and refurbished. We had to extend the tank elements a bit so that they would fit. In some places on the hull, water stains still refer to the boat's past. After all, the boat has been lying upside down in a barn for a good 25 years. “That left its mark,” explains the wooden boat fan. For the final work on the boat, his own living room would have had to be used as a work space, he reveals and praises the boat as “very stable”.
