29ers come with top international sailors

The Warnemünder Woche is the international springboard for ambitious young Olympic athletes. The Ilca classes traditionally choose the champions of the European Cup in Warnemünde - young athletes who will later be seen in the one-person dinghies at the Olympic Games. Now the 29ers are also evaluating their regatta Warnemünder Woche to a Euro Cup and thus integrate it into the top regatta series in Europe. The sailors mature in the 29er and later switch to the fast Olympic classes 49er, 49erFX and Nacra17. For Robert Hallmann, chairman of the German 29er class association, there are a variety of reasons Warnemünder Woche to the status of a Euro Cup regatta: “We had strong demand for a Euro Cup regatta from the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Berlin areas. This year Hallmann expects around 40 crews with a large international participation. "The Warnemünder Woche is a start-up when it comes to the Euro Cup that still has to establish itself. But the scheduling placement between the European Championships in Poland and the World Championships in Denmark in August will ensure that some top teams Warnemünder Woche as an ideal event in between.” Already three months before the event, entries from five nations are in the 29er list. “The international starters are very well supported by the German dealer Holger Jess with charter boats, so that they can all sail the big events in Northern Europe,” reports Hallmann.

For the German class association, Warnemünde will also be a good benchmark for its own offspring. Because she has hired a fee-based trainer who is now training the so-called KV squad - a group of talented and committed sailors who have not yet been promoted to the support structure of the sailing associations.
