29er: Double premiere for the youth class
The fast 29ers will be available for the first time from July 7th to 9th Warnemünder Woche. The international field promises exciting and action-packed races in the Warnemünde wave.
“We are expecting a field of around 20 to 25 boats that will come to Warnemünde,” said Christian Krause, second chairman of the German 29er class association, a few weeks before the event Warnemünder Woche. There were even a few more reports at 29. When looking at the entry list, the internationality of the crews is striking, including entries from South Africa, Australia and five from Hong Kong. For Krause, this is a clear indication of the attractiveness of the Baltic Sea region: “Warnemünde is world-famous. The wind, the waves and the short distances to the train. This is probably unique.”
The two-man gliding dinghy 29er is an international youth boat class that also serves as a springboard for the Olympic boat classes 49er for men and 49erFX for women. The crew weight is usually between 90 and 160 kilograms. The skiff is 4,45 meters long and 1,7 meters wide. Upwind, the 29er has 12,5 square meters of sail area, with an additional 17 square meters under gennaker. This makes it easy to reach high speeds.
The Warnemünde appearance of the 29er class will be a double premiere: the 29er is in the program for the first time this year Warnemünder Woche and for the first time as part of the Warnemünder Woche a regatta of the newly created German Cup was sailed. The Germancup is a racing series made up of four regattas within Germany. At the end there is an overall ranking in several scoring groups. “We want to promote 29er sailing in Germany,” says Krause. “In the future, the German Cup will always begin and end in Warnemünde.”
