On July 11th, the recording label Coaast TMP, the Rostock & Warnemünde Tourism Office, KVS Rostock and the Kulturmeer agency invite you to “Smoke on the Water XX” in the Warnemünde Kurhausgarten from 16 p.m. to 22 p.m. – a musical highlight not just for rock fans.
In 2005, the first part of the novel trilogy “Smoke on the Water” was published, which also marked the start of the associated open-air festival. That was almost 20 years ago now, and even Andreas Buhse from the Warnemünde record store Coaast – initiator of the festival and author of the novels under the pseudonym Michael Terpitz – can hardly believe how quickly the time has passed. “We held the first festival when the book was published. At the time I thought it would just be open air. But it went well, and the principle of offering local artists a stage was well received. So we just carried on and are celebrating our 20th “Smoke on the Water” anniversary this year,” says Buhse.
As the author Michael Terpitz, he describes in his books the attitude to life of the beat and rock generation in Mecklenburg in a heartwarming, amusing and emotionally moving way, using the example of a record collector. Musically, the accompanying novel soundtracks reflect this attitude to life. “Smoke on the Water” has been inspiring in all its facets for two decades now: with novels, recordings, stage productions, a rock musical and the annual open-air by the sea.
For fans of rock music by local artists and the novel trilogy, Thursday is Warnemünder Woche a fixed date for a long time. For many years now, the music festival “Smoke on the Water – the Open Air by the Sea” has taken place, which is thematically linked to the novel and CD edition of the same name.
Like every year we play at the 86th. Warnemünder Woche local bands and artists at the iconic open air by the sea songs from the current novel soundtracks and others from the “Smoke on the Water” edition. To mark the anniversary, there are also some very special concert highlights on the program. Among other things, blues legend Peter Schmidt and Spill frontman Olaf Hobrlant will present unplugged various songs from over 20 soundtrack albums, such as “Little Town by the Sea”, “The First Rays of the Sun”, “Warnemünde in the Morning” and “Mokuhila”. . In addition, the new “Smoke on the Water” hit “Ekoman”, written by Olaf Hobrlant and Michael Terpitz, will be presented live for the first time at the “Open-Air by the Sea”. The crowning highlight of the show is a “Smoke on the Water” all-star band. As always, the Warnemünde author and DJ Michael Terpitz will be leading the program.
The six-hour concert program of the music festival will be opened by the band Easterlings, which emerged from the Warnemünde rock project “Jugend rockt”. Under the motto “Classic rock/music we grew up with,” legendary songs from the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Deep Purple, Rolling Stones, Puhdys, Pink Floyd, Mark Knopfler, Joe Cocker and many other well-known musicians will be presented in a new way robe presented. In the second part of the festival, the popular Celtic rock band Bad Penny will once again deliver songs from their current CD and a variety of their big hits from three decades - a performance that attracts numerous fans every year. The band – just like the open air by the sea – can also look back on a long musical past. In 1998 she went on tour in Germany for the first time and has been delighting audiences ever since with frontman Ola van Sander (vocals and guitar).
The anniversary evening ends with the performance of the “Smoke on the Water” all-star band, which consists of members of popular groups such as Five Men On The Rocks, Bad Penny, Spill, Jackbeat and other musical guests. Organizer Andreas Buhse is particularly looking forward to the final concert: “It will be a great session at the end of the festival – for an hour the “Smoke on the Water” veterans will present songs from the story of the novel trilogy. I'm looking forward to the program that Ola van Sander brings to the stage with the other musicians. I'm also looking forward to the Easterlings, who have basically grown up with the festival. At their first appearance with Ola van Sander, the young musicians were just ten or twelve years old. They’re now around 20. It’s nice that they’re still performing on “Smoke on the Water.”
Just in time for the anniversary, Andreas Buhse and his record label Coaast released the 20th album from the “Smoke on Water” edition. It's called "Lauter Leben" and includes 18 songs from well-known and popular local bands such as Bad Penny, Spill, Third Choice, Five Men On The Rocks and SiebenMorgen. The soloists include Antje Medwed, Michael Treptow, Axel Tolksdorff, Pete Larsen, Olaf Hobrlant, Lutz Dammann and Ola van Sander. Author Michael Terpitz connects the album titles together in a ten-page short story in the CD booklet. “The topic is a historical look at Warnemünde, a walk at the lighthouse from today’s perspective and the one in 1965,” he reveals.
